In 2017, there were 14.6 million students in higher education institutions in Africa, or 6.6 percent of the world's 220.7 million students.

Many African universities struggle with a lack of funding since all key sources—such as tuition fees, auxiliary income, research grants, government subventions, charitable contributions, and low-interest loans—are constrained.  

When you invest in TAMU, you will be contributing toward closing the resource gap and equipping us to provide our students with the quality of education that they deserve.  

Because African institutions are not graduating enough students with terminal degrees, there is still a shortage of human capital, particularly in terms of qualified teaching staff.  

When you invest in TAMU, you will be helping us hire and maintain quality faculty from around the world while investing in the career growth of our local junior faculty. 

 Research output in African is terribly low. Africa invests 0.59 percent of GDP on research and development, compared to a global average of 1.79 percent, according to the most recent UNESCO Science Report 2021. It comes as no surprise that it only contributes to 1.01 percent of global R&D spending, 2.50 percent of global researchers, and 3.50 percent of scholarly publications, compared to a region like Asia's respective shares of 45.7 percent, 44.5 percent, and 48.0 percent. For example, the entire African continent, with a population of 1.3 billion, produces fewer scholarly publications than Canada (3.60%), with a population of 37.7 million!

Infrastructure is frequently not up to par. Deferred maintenance is common, and physical facilities frequently do not keep up with expansion in enrollments and academic programs. Under COVID-19, a brutal lack of investment in electronic infrastructures became painfully apparent, forcing campuses to close and forcing universities to move their operations and service delivery online—something several universities were unable to do.  

When you invest in TAMU, you will be contributing one brick to the ultramodern academic citadel that we envisage to build, not only to provide a comfortable learning environment, but also to serve as an inspiration and a model in Africa.  

Systems of leadership and administration are frequently jeopardized by outside interference and politicization, internal problems, authoritarianism, corruption, and a lack of opportunity for leadership growth.  

When you invest in TAMU, you will be helping us stay as a private venture that is capitalized enough to stay neutral from political entanglements, and this immune to external influences and corruption. 

Academic cultures are more complicated, and arguments over equality, diversity, and inclusion are becoming more heated as university communities become more diverse and expectations increase.  

When you invest in TAMU, you will be helping us keep our tuition low and empowering us to leverage technology to reach more learners, thereby promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. 

Persistent mismatches between university education and economic needs, which result in high levels of employability, show that the quality of graduates is still a problem.  

When you invest in TAMU, you will be giving us the resources and competitive advantage we need to negotiate training collaborations with industry partners, toward producing graduates that are a good fit for market demands.  

There is a huge challenge at the level of balancing the historical legacies and contemporary pressures of asymmetrical internationalisation and the enduring demands of intellectual, institutional, ideological decolonisation and indigenisation.  

When you invest in TAMU, you will be helping us to be able to afford the curriculum reforms, books, and resources that both faculty and students need to orchestrate an educational experience that is truly transformative. 

African universities perform poorly in global rankings of higher education. For instance, just 60 of the 1,500 universities listed in the Times Higher Education 2021 World University Rankings are located in Africa. Egypt leads the list with 21, followed by South Africa with 10, Algeria with 8, Nigeria with 6, Morocco with 5, Tunisia with 4, and Algeria with 8 universities.
